Abstract
Objectives : Schizophrenic patients show cognitive impairments in various areas. The majority of these impairments is alleged to be caused by the impairment of working memory, especially spatial working memory. Visuospatial working memory impairment has been reported in schizophrenic patients. In addition to cognitive impairments, emotional impairment is a pathognomic sign of schizophrenia. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of emotional valence and arousal has on schizophrenic patients performing spatial delayed response tasks.

Methods : 20 hospitalized schizophrenic patients in Kong-ju National Hospital and 29 normal controls were included. We designed the spatial delayed response task showing photo targets divided into 4 categories, high arousal-positive valence, high arousal-negative valence, medium arousal-positive valence, medium arousal-negative valence. We checked reaction time and accuracy.

Results : Both the patient and control groups showed lower accuracy in the negative valence task (p<0.01). Compared to the control group, patients showed lower accuracy(p<0.01) and longer reaction time (p=0.09) throughout the total task. In regard to reaction time, the interaction between group and emotional arousal showed a statistical trend (p=0.06). In a post hoc analysis, the difference in reaction time according to emotional arousal was statistically significant in control groups (p<0.05) whereas there was no statistical significance in the patient group (p=0.66).

Conclusion : Results suggest that schizophrenic patients have impairments in spatial working memory compared to normal controls. Although schizophrenic patients show difficulty recognizing emotional signals, this difficulty has less of an effect on spatial working memory in the case of schizophrenic patients compared to control groups.
